Digital signage is a form of advertising in which content and messages are displayed on digital signs with a common goal of delivering targeted messages to specific locations and times. The content could be informational or advertising that is static or dynamic.

Key Components of Digital Signage Applications

1) Displays – Digital signage displays may be LCD or plasma screens, LED boards, projections screens or other emerging display types.

2) Content – In the context of digital signage, “content” issued to describe anything designed and displayed on screens.  Various hardware and software options exist, providing a range of different ways to schedule and playback content.

3) Computer Hardware Network – A management server is usually required to manage the displays. This can be located anywhere, so long as it is connected to the digital signage network. There can be an additional server on the back of the display that receives content from the master server.  There is also all in one content servers that just reside on the back of the display and are upload via a USB drive.

4) Network Infrastructure – Unless the player server is located at the display, there is usually a network connecting the digital signage displays. The video (and possibly audio) is distributed to the displays through a series of wired network connections (such as Cat 5e cables) or wireless connectivity through the use of wireless adapters.  HDMI extenders via Cat 5e cable are commonly used to send a high-quality picture to displays hundreds of feet away.
